Why don't Europeans wear European style clothing anymore? They all wear American style clothing since the second WW. Do Europeans not take pride in their native clothing?
If we’re talking about the t-shirt and jeans then you have a point, as these
were made popular by Americans.
Except
that Jeans were patented by immigrants from Europe - Jacob W. Davis was Latvian
by birth and Levi Strauss was born in Buttonheim, Bavaria (now part of Germany
as he was born in 1829). The classic men’s suit was made popular in Victorian
England as a more pragmatic alternative to the gaudy fancy coats of the Regency
period while for women the revolution towards less conservative dresses was thanks
to French maiden Coco Chanel and her Little Black Dress.
Very French.
Sure,
it was inspired by Henry Ford’s famous motto for the Model T “you can
have any colour you want, so long as it’s black” but it is still
coming from a French model and fashion guru.
It
merely appears to be American clothing because you look over,
you see we all dress like you, there are these pictures of Europeans weating
quite colourful exotic outfits so you
wonder “why did everyone stop wearing these?”.
It’s
hard to say what fashion is American and what is European. Culturally America
gets much of its identity from Europe anyway as long before World War II the
fashion identity of Europe changed to a more universal look as people adapted
to working in factories and with machines. There was much more mixing thanks to
the cosmopolitanism in great cities like Vienna, Geneva, London, Paris and so
on a country’s latest styles were no longer unique to a particular region of
the world.
This
had been going on for centuries in Europe; England, France and Germany would
effectively take turns in being the trendsetter, offering fashions that
everyone else among the middle and upper classes would wear. For everyone else,
we wear what works, this is true of any country. Styles change, America has
something of a hegemony on culture but a lot of that comes from or is inspired
by Europe.
Styles
change, tastes change and as machining devices get better, the clothes get more
comfortable. There’s been a trend towards minimalist design since the 1830s because
more and more people stopped wearing hand-crafted outfits. The new
machine-fashioned outfits were cheaper, easier to replace and were frequently
made with as little material as possible without losing their practicality.
