Why do people wear high heels?

Why do PEOPLE wear high heels? First of all, lets understand that high heels on their own are eye catching, stylish, and usually very attractive footwear. As moving pedestals, they pleasingly sculpt the wearer's feet and even help to present better profiles for the lower extremities. There has been no other footwear of record that has gotten so much notoriety for their beauty and elegance, especially in the last century, with the shaping of the spike and then stiletto heels. 

Now, every person has an inborn sense to maintain a self-image of looking good. To do this, they have an eye for the things they consider would help them achieve that look. Since society has the audacity to act as everybody's proxy and tell them what they are suppose to desire and abhor, mixed messages are generated when they conflict with the knowledge people learned through their own experiences. For example: According to social edict, males and females aren't suppose to be alike in any way or wear the same type of apparel. Yet, females now have their own line of menswear because that's what a large number of women were already wearing and they are encouraged to take on responsibilities/careers that men have dominated. Men, on the other hand, are considered less of a person should they cross the line and show any outward display of wearing items from the female styles, even from the menswear. When men do or find work in areas many woman have been known to do, they often don't get the respect males get in jobs men are usually known for. Being a Mr. Mom is an important need for some family situations, but these men often have to take a back seat in their social standing.

Most all of the comments, so far, seems to have assumed and suggest as much, that females are the only people that could wear or want to wear high heels in this day and age. This has never been true, for males can be and are just as enamored. What society proclaims, doesn't mean they are talking for individuals. This is a matter of personal taste and the willingness to find the heels that accent their appearance and comfortably fit according to the wearer's preferences. Since being a young male child - toddler, I have always had the desire to wear gorgeous and stylish footwear, which has led me to wearing high heels with a preference for the classic look of the stiletto pumps.
