What are some great tips on how to walk in high heels?
There are plenty of tips online, but if you really want to look
fantastic walking in heels like a pro, take lessons!
There
used to be classes in etiquette and deportment offered for young women that
included things like how to walk in heels, sit appropriately in dresses, set a
formal table, use the correct silverware, etc. Those lessons are still offered
in some places to those preparing for a debutante season or at a finishing
school for upperclass ladies, but if one cannot find those teachers or just
wants walking lessons there are runway coaches for models in major cities
around the world. Get a group of friends together as one might do for a great
brunch but instead pay for an hour or two of instruction on how to strut in
high heels. Nothing beats seeing a pro walking in person and getting
instruction and feedback from them as you try it! If you cannot get a coach, perhaps
look through old episodes of America's Next Top Model for the episodes where
they brought in a runway coach. They show the ladies learning and point out
mistakes, so it could be helpful to see what looks bad and hear why it is
wrong.
Start
with a moderately high heel at first and work your way up to the really high
skinny heels. Learning to walk in a four or five inch high stiletto is like
trying to learn as a brand new driver in a Formula One race car. You will crash
badly, and video will likely get uploaded of your disaster.
Make
sure that your shoes truly fit your feet. Scuff the bottom with sandpaper if
they are new and slick. Practice on various surfaces before going public, and
take small steps. Carpet, tile, concrete and god forbid, marble will all feel
different and potentially scary to you if you are wobbling along on an
unfamiliar shoe without practicing.
Hold
the rail or someone’s arm while taking stairs if they are wet or if you are not
yet feeling sure of your balance in high heels.
